:: Navels ::

Ah, the navel piercing. No other piercing hallmarks the modern American piercing scene like the navel. Although piercing had been going on in the queer and SM underground in the US for several decades, and has been a mainstay worldwide since pre-history, with the advent of the navel piercing the White American media sat up and took notice. Why the navel, and why now? Depending on whether you ask an anthropologist or an angry parent, your answer will vary widely. But if you ask the average person considering the piercing, you will probably hear that it is just somehow sexy. Clothing designers know it. It's no accident that low-rider jeans and sarong skirts hit the runways as models were feeling the urge to accessorize their bellies. The glint of jewelry on an otherwise bare midriff just so gently hints at something more going on...

Whatever your reasons for getting it, the navel piercing is definitely one of the most difficult piercings to heal. Healing can last from 6 months to a year, and infections and scarring from improper treatment are common. This is not to say you will have problems. Most difficulties with navel piercings stem from one of two problems: a navel which is not suitable for piercing; and improper care. With the accurate information and a lot of dedication, there is no reason you can't have a perfect navel piercing.
