:: Outer Labia ::

These are the thicker, (often) hair-covered folds of skin which cover the hood and inner labia. They are sometimes referred to as the "outer lips." Though they are close to the inner labia in proximity, the outer labia heal very differently. Because of the thickness of the tissue to be pierced, the healing can be difficult and takes anywhere from 2 to 6 months. If you are trying to decide between inner and outer labia piercings, keep in mind that, contrary to what you may be thinking, inner labia will be much less painful and far easier to heal. Both piercings are performed using forceps to lightly clamp the skin, holding it taut as the needle is thrust quickly through the tissue. Jewelry is then followed through on the back of the needle.

Recommended initial jewelry for outer labia is usually a 12g captive with a small enough diameter that the ring doesn't get pinched or twisted when you close your thighs. Women with large thighs may want to consider choosing another piercing, as healing may be especially difficult for them. The ideal outer labia for piercing have a similar shape to inner labia, with a definite edge to the fold of tissue. Women with puffy or flatter outer labia may also want to reconsider their piercing choice.
